At Chiefswood Park, we pride ourselves in caring for Mother Earth and we welcome guests to join us on this journey of environmental pursuits. Minimizing our impact on the environment, while enjoying outdoor activities ensures the enjoyment of all visitors while preserving the natural environment. Here are some key practices to follow while visiting Chiefswood Park:

  • Leave No Trace: This principle emphasizes leaving the area as you found it or better. Pack out all trash, including food wrappers, bottles, and other waste.
  • Stay on Marked Trails: Stick to designated paths and trails to avoid trampling vegetation and disturbing wildlife habitats. Some areas are full of Poison Ivy, so leaving the trail is also a matter of safety.
  • Respect Wildlife: Observe animals from a distance and never feed them. Keep pets on a leash where required to prevent them from chasing wildlife.
  • Control Noise Levels: Be mindful of others enjoying the park. Keep noise levels down, especially in areas designated as quiet zones. Chiefswood Park quiet hours are between 10pm and 8am.
  • Camp Responsibly: Where camping is allowed, use designated campsites and follow campground regulations. Pitch tents in designated areas and avoid setting up camp near water sources.
  • Practice Fire Safety: Use established fire rings. Always fully extinguish fires before leaving and comply with any fire restrictions.
  • Minimize Impact: Avoid picking flowers, disturbing rocks, or damaging trees. Leave natural features undisturbed for others to enjoy. Some plants – such as the Trillium flower – are rooted together beneath the surface. Picking a Trillium flower may kill an entire system of flowers not only in that area, but also those connected to the same rooting system.
  • Respect Park Rules and Regulations: Familiarize yourself with park rules regarding activities such as fishing, boating, and swimming. Follow these rules to protect yourself and the environment. You can find a copy of Chiefswood Park’s Rules here.
  • Be Prepared: Carry essentials such as water, snacks, appropriate clothing, life jackets, maps, and first aid supplies when out on the Grand River. This ensures your safety and reduces the need for assistance.
  • Educate Yourself: Understanding the environment enriches your experience and promotes responsible behaviour. You can learn more about the history of Chiefswood Park here.

By practicing these responsible outdoor habits, you contribute to the conservation of natural areas and help ensure that future generations can enjoy Chiefswood Park as much as you do.
